In the summer of 2015, Baranov Museum Curator of Collection & Exhibits, Anjuli Grantham, and local photographer Breanna Peterson of Breanna Peterson Photography traveled to the west side of Kodiak to document the unique place, its people and stories. The West Side Stories exhibit, showcasing the oral histories and photographs taken, opened at the Baranov Museum in May, 2016. Below are a selection of the photographs taken on the west side as part of our West Side Stories project.
Twenty oral histories were given to our project by set netters, bear guides, fishermen and women, cannery workers and west side residents. We are so grateful to all the interviewees for sharing their stories with us.
West Side Stories Videos
From the oral histories taken from west side residents, past and present, a series of short audio stories were created. These were combined with the photographs taken in 2015, photos provided by the interviewees and from the Kodiak Historical Society Archives to create short videos.
