First Friday-Sami Reindeer People Temporary Exhibit

Add the museum to your Kodiak Arts Council First Friday Art Walk plans. Stop by between 5-7 pm for free admission to the opening of The Sami Reindeer People in our temporary exhibit space. We are happy to host this fascinating traveling exhibit as a part of Kodiak's Scandinavian Culture and Film Festival. Display will run for the month of November.

Presentation by Jim Dillard

"The Role of Finnish Craftsmen in Building Kodiak's Russian American Magazin (now the Baranov museum.)" This program will strongly question long-held beliefs about the origins of the building that is now the Baranov Museum. Both documentary and physical evidence will be presented to show that the building was in fact built by carpenters from Finland, and not by Russian workers as most historians believe. Lunch and Learn- Sami Stories

Bring your lunch and join us on the porch for a presentation by Lois Stover, Pearl Johnson and Cherie Biddle. They will share stories of Sami culture and lore. After the lecture, be sure to visit "The Sami Reindeer People" exhibit in our temporary gallery space. This presentation is a part of the Kodiak Scandinavian Culture and Film festival. Free Arts-n-Crafts-Apple Prints!

Did you know we have an apple tree in the yard? Come make apple print thank you notes and postcards while we learn about it. Write a kind message for someone and leave it in our apple print mailbox. We will get your notes to the post office for you. No sign-up required.

Story Time on the Porch

Free, monthly story time at the museum. Bring a non-messy snack and join us on the porch for a fun story and mini-discussion. Books and topics are chosen with kids up to 5 years of age in mind but all ages are welcome. This month's book selection is The Alaska Mother Goose by Shelley Gill.

Giving Tuesday Reception

You are cordially invited to the Baranov's Giving Tuesday Reception. Tea and cookies will be served during the museums's open hours. View a mini exhibit featuring a collection of our historic recipes perfect for the holidays. Take home a copy of one of the handwritten recipe cards to add to your own kitchen collection. Suggested donation $5. All donations will benefit the Permanent Exhibit Redesign & Facility Upgrade Project.

First Friday Art Walk-“Works of Our Lifetime”

Works of Our Lifetime: A Collection of Modern Kodiak Artwork Opening night of our latest temporary exhibit showcasing visual arts in a variety of mediums, inspired by and made in the Kodiak Archipelago. All collection purchases were made possible with support from the Rasmussen Art Acquisition Fund. Tea and light refreshments will be served.

Scandinavian Shaved Wood Ornament Workshop

December 9, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 2:30 pm

Come make a traditional Swedish shaved wood ornament for the holidays... or for year round! Choose from two class sessions- 10:30am or 1pm. $10 fee to reserve your spot. All tools and supplies will be provided. Space is limited to 10 makers per session so be sure to reserve your spot early. Call or stop by the museum to sign up. 907-486-5920.
