History Speaks! Caring for Your Keepsakes

At this session, an introduction to at-home preservation will be presented by Curator of Collections and Exhibits, Alana Blumenthal. She will show examples of how the Museum cares for its artifacts and offer suggestions of affordable solutions for your treasures at home.  Join the Kodiak Historical Society for this fun and informative presentation on how to protect your family heirlooms. Admission is free andopen to the public, and refreshments are served, including cookies, compliments of Java Flats.

Stacy Studebaker, naturalist,botanist, author, and environmental educator will present a talk on how she documented Kodiak's Plant life across the archipelago. The program shows the collection process and Stacy’s botanical work over the last 30 years with emphasis on her ten years working as the volunteer field botanist on the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. Storytime on the Porch

The letters of this Alaska Commercial Company storekeeper are a vital source of information about economic change in the village of Kaguyak during1896-1904. Woche’s letters provide fascinating insight into his complex personality and the challenges of the early American period in Kodiak’s villages. What is your impression of Kodiak?  A salmonberry leaf, a shell, a spruce tip?  Join us to create your own Kodiak Impressions necklace, medallion, or bracelet with “Sculpy” oven-bake clay. You can bring a small object to press into the clay to how your impression of Kodiak or chose from those provided. Alaska Sesquicentennial Exhibit on Display

The Baranov Museum is proud to announce that an 8-panel display depicting the 150th anniversary (the Sesquicentennial) of the purchase of Alaska will be on display on the porch from May 15-June 3, 2017. Thanks to the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and the Alaska Parks for the loan of these panels that tell the story of Alaska from its earliest history through Russian America and the American Period.

Celebrate the start of the salmon season by listening to the story, S is for Salmon by Hannah Viano. Children ages 0-5 are invited to bring their favorite stuffed animal and join in the fun and create an alphabet page of their own. and B is for Baranov, come join the story and the first salmon of the season. Upcycling with your local Recycling Guru! Stephanie Mason Director of Threshold Services, Inc. will have a couple DIY upcycling projects during this Friday's art walk. "Turn an old t-shirt into a tote bag!" and "Make beads and jewelry out of recycled paper!" Stop by the Museum between 5pm & 7pm and meet Stephanie and make a useful item.
